One winter plumaged located at c1230hrs feeding just of the small island between the pylon island and the 2 larger islands further east, so rather distant, watched from the Spit using x60 on my Kowa telescope. Size roughly the same as Coot the bird was dark with a dusky grey wash to its flanks and head and a more brownish wash to its neck, the crown was dark grey as were the lores. The bill was long, dagger shaped with a distinct yellow base and dark tip. After watching the bird for 10-15 minutes I decided to move round to the north bank which would be closer to the bird, KEM joined me but unfortunately the bird had moved and could not be re-located.
