Around the churchyard at St. Nicholas, Hurst and viewed from the car park at The Castle. 2 in bare trees and 6 more flew over. Initially spotted what looked like a Hawfinch in bare tree in front of the pub as I was driving past. It had gone by the time I got out of the car but then found the others. I'd wondered for a while if the Lavell's birds might be hanging around here as well.

Looking through the locked front gates, the bare tree behind the right end of Shaw house had least 18 perched in it. As not all of the tree is visible, it is likely that there were more. The gates should be unlocked at 11:00 today, but I heard that there is a Sealed Knot event, so there is likely to be major disturbance. SU475684.

Probably more but I got distracted by passers by wondering what I was looking at! Feeding in the many yew trees here and perching in tall bare trees nearby, either within the gardens of Shaw house or next to the river. Could hear them calling almost continuously. Never occurred to me before, but looking carefully under the copse from a distance showed a bird hopping about and feeding for at least 10 minutes. While watching this, two more flew S over the field (and one later returned).

prob m. 4th sighting of THE Newbury Hawfinch! Third one while walking the mut (3:1 to the dog). Initially heard calling in trees along Northcroft lane in front of the leisure centre, then if flew to a small tree on the edge of the park before flying N and then W. Nice to get a reasonable view of one perched instead of just a flyover! SU465673.
