fem/imm. Fem or imm observed overhead, then flew low fast and agile over fields before turning, gaining height and heading NE toward Frogmore Farm. Under parts buff with dark streaking on breast and upper belly. Wings darker with broad base and barred sharp triangular primaries, wing beats fast interspersed with occasional glide. Medium length tail with dark regular barring to square ended tip. Upper parts a cold grey/brown. Flushed everything in field including corvids which were larger than the bird.

male. I was walking north along the Thames when the gulls and pigeons on the fields at Streatley Farm "spooked". Scanning for a Peregrine, instead a nice steel grey backed male Merlin flew low east over the hedge/tree line running along the field boundary parallel to the river pursuing a small passerine (Mipit?). It crossed the river in front of me, giving reasonable view (chestnut underneath, darker outer wings and moustache seen), before disappearing into trees on Oxon bank. Seen again shortly after flying back west, no sign of prey, then flew off south.
