male. This bird with a obvious brown cap has has visited the garden several times during December. I noted it as a female. On a few occasions though, I thought there was a hint of black in the crown when seen at a particular angle. This morning the black was very obvious especially on one side of the head, also hinted through the crown. It would appear this "female" is actually a male undergoing a moult of its crown feathers. Seems a bit late in the season. Not seen this before.
