15:35 | I was out for a walk at this suburban site when a heron-like bird came flying from the direction of the Thames Valley. I had no bins with me but as it flew past me quite close but at no great height I noted the brown body, thick neck that was kinked but then level with the rest of the body, the bowed wings that were not long but rounded at the ends, and the protruding legs. Overall size was smaller and more compact than Grey Heron. It flew on in a south easterly direction. Bitterns are known to winter at Dinton Pastures, which is in that general direction.
